Constructed completely of mudcakes, the Tomb of Askia was erected in 1495 and symbolizes a turning point in the culture of Mali, when Gao became capital of the Songhai Empire. Currently, this historic tomb is eroding at a rapid rate and is also at risk from international conflict.
